Color Doppler Explained

Color Doppler explained: how Doppler ultrasound shows blood flow direction and character, in general terms.

What colour Doppler adds

Colour Doppler adds blood-flow information to an ultrasound image. Ordinary greyscale ultrasound shows the shape and texture of tissue. Doppler ultrasound uses the change in frequency of sound reflected from moving blood to detect flow, and colour Doppler displays that flow as colour overlaid on the greyscale image, conventionally with one colour for flow towards the probe and another for flow away from it. That overlay lets the operator see where blood is flowing, in which direction and with what character, which is useful in vascular, cardiac and obstetric examinations, among others.

Modes around colour Doppler

Colour Doppler is usually offered alongside other modes. Pulsed-wave Doppler measures flow velocity at a specific point, power Doppler shows the strength of the Doppler signal and is more sensitive to slow flow, and B-mode and M-mode give the underlying anatomical image and motion over time. The product pages on this site list the modes published for each model, and a buyer should check that list, because not every model offers every mode. In particular, continuous-wave Doppler, which measures very high flow velocities, is published only for one cardiac model in this range, and it should not be assumed to be present in other models.

Before you inquire

Before payment, confirm the exact model, probe type, frequency range, scanning depth, connectivity, battery specification, included accessories, minimum order quantity, lead time and price for your order in writing. The minimum order quantity and lead time figures quoted on this site come from the supplier's marketplace listing (for example, a listed minimum of 1 piece and delivery within 15 workdays) and are shown only as listed values to confirm per order, not as a fixed quotation. Certificates available upon request.
